Growing cannabis from seed is a lengthy and extremely expensive process. While you might think the work would be worth it once you get to the harvest stage, many cannabis plants grown from seed never make it to full maturity. For this reason (and others), many home and commercial cultivators have turned to cannabis clones, instead.
In part 1 of our guide to the benefit of growing cannabis from clones, we discussed factors like fast growth rate and guaranteed genetics. Here, we’re going to cover a few more of the reasons clones are superior to seeds and how they can help you dramatically increase crop yield without spending a penny more than you already are!
Guaranteed Female Plants
When you grow cannabis from seed, you run the risk of growing male plants. Male plants can pollinate female plants, rendering them useless for cannabis cultivation. To prevent male plants from destroying full crops, growers must diligently monitor seedings and quickly remove the males.
Clones are cuttings taken from female cannabis plants. Once rooted, these cuttings grow just like seedling plants, but without the risk of them being male. Because clones are the genetic copies of their “mother plants,” they are guaranteed to be female 100% of the time.
What About Feminized Seeds?
Feminized cannabis seeds are the result of selective breeding and genetic modification. Feminized seeds are engineered to produce mostly (or only) female plants, helping to eliminate the risk of growing male plants. While feminized seeds work most of the time, they aren’t the perfect solution, since male plants are still sometimes produced by feminized seeds.
Reduced Cost of Growing
Seeds are expensive, especially if you go the feminized route. The genetic engineering required to create feminized seeds makes them extra expensive, and when you consider that not all seeds will grow to maturity, the actual cost of each seed goes up exponentially.
Beyond the actual cost of the seeds themselves, growing seeds is costly in terms of time and resources. Plants can take months to reach maturity, and some of those will most certainly be male.
Because clones are just cuttings of already existing plants, they are far less expensive than cannabis seeds. Clones are also guaranteed to grow (since they are already rooted plants) and guaranteed to be female. Basically, growing cannabis from clones instead of from seed can save you time, money, and resources while delivering a larger final yield.
